How do I get a divorce if my spouse won't sign the papers?

A co-worker of mine filed for divorce. The paperwork was drawn up, and her spouse was given a copy. In prison. Seems he was a little too fond of drugs and beating up people. It was pretty clear. She got custody of the kids. No child support asked. She kept the home, the car, everything. He really couldnt do anything about it, he was in prison for a long stretch. All he had to do was sign the papers, and the marriage was over. He refused to sign. He had this mistaken belief that if he didnt sign, they were still married and when he got out he could resume life with his bride and kids. Unfazed, she contacted her lawyer, who drew up another paper detailing that because he was in prison and refused to sign, she had no way of going through counseling with him to save the marriage and wished to proceed with the divorce. The judge agreed. She was able to not only prove the marriage was broken, but that divorce was in the best interest of the children. She had to wait another three months, in case he wanted to file any petitions. He thought hed stymied her, so he filed nothing. The divorce was finalized without his consent.
