What would happen to divorce petition when the petitioner does not?
Eventually your lawyer can ask for a Ex Parte Decree which should be granted. However a person who does not show up is dangerous and it is highly unlikely he will actually follow any of the demands made in the divorce decree by the Judge. However once decree is granted (Ex-Parte) - the other party can regard themselves as divorced.
