Obey the Protection from Abuse order. If the hearing to make it permanent hasnt been held yet, make sure to attend the hearing so you can tell your side of the story. If the hearing has already been held, youre bound by it. Youll still have the opportunity in the custody hearing to tell the court why youre a fit parent and capable of being a good caregiver for your child. Tell the court about how youve cared for the child in the past and how youve supported them (not financially, but practically, such as by changing diapers, walking the floor half the night with a crying baby, feeding, bathing, dressing, playing, helping with homework, going to school and sports activities, whatever else with older children). Show that you know your children: who their friends are, what their favorite things are, etc. Be ready to talk about how you deal when youre frustrated by and with your kids. Your local courthouse may have free materials for people who are dealing with divorce and other issues DIY; or it may have referral material for free help. If you live near a city that has a law school, check the website to see if it has a free family-law clinic. You might also see if you qualify for Kansas legal-aid services.
